Project Proposal

Need.

Children are the greatest asset of the nation, comprising one third of the Indian population. Vulnerable and innocent, they are far from availing benefits of the rights and policies in place for them. Children are just children – a voiceless entity – in a ‘world’ constructed by adults, how do we assert the significance of their individuality, where enactments of their basic rights even, are struggled for?

In India, in the absence of societal or cultural norms protective or respectful of children, and the strong presence of power relations associated with children and/or gender, abuse of children is widespread. The economic and geo-political situation of India, has increased the vulnerability of children to an even greater extent.

Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) is a universal problem that occurs across gender, caste, religious, ethnic, occupational and socio-economic groups. But the subject of CSA being a taboo in Indian society, there is a conspiracy of silence around the subject and a misconception that it does not exist in India. Also, in most cases, matters of CSA remain undisclosed due to the psychological complexities, or ignorance of the child.

There is a need for greater efforts for raising awareness for prevention of, action against and healing from CSA and thus take a step further to create a safer environment for children to flourish.
